NYC DOT Facilities Maintenance at Sunrise Yard has received LEED Platinum Certification.
This project is a high performance home base for the carpenters, electricians, and plumbers who maintain and support NYC DOT’s portfolio of buildings. The 27,000 square foot building, located in a residential area of Queens, provides a model for NYC Department of Design + Construction’s efforts to demonstrate that sustainable facilities are achievable using low-tech strategies--ones accessible to the general public. The Team’s analysis of the program led to a three-zone building organization that met both functional and environmental objectives: 1) Offices and personnel support; 2)Workshops; and 3) Stock room. Requirements for systems, daylight and finishes were separately defined, and this became the core of the design and green strategies. The building’s energy efficiency is nominally 85% above its baseline use.
