IBI Group ▪ Gruzen Samton developed an innovative design solution for the complicated restoration and addition to a portion of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel Parking Garage. Working closely with community groups and government agencies, including MTA Bridges & Tunnels, we addressed concerns about the deterioration of the original brick façade and steel structure and about poor natural ventilation within the facility. The project involved re-cladding the garage with a new, porous façade, as well as upgrading the structure and incorporating significant improvements to traffic circulation. The result is a sleek, contemporary structure which includes an aluminum louver and metal panel skin positioned on top of the upgraded structure. This creative solution, along with the addition of a new brick base (with delicate details), was an innovative, efficient, and relatively inexpensive means of renovating and upgrading the facility. The screen, which complements its Art Deco-inspired, concrete parent building, also functions as a shield, preventing strong, artificial light (emitted from the garage) from blasting the adjacent residential buildings of Battery Park City.
