IBI Group ▪ Gruzen Samton redesigned the mezzanines and pedestrian passageways connecting Grand Central terminal with three subway lines and Metro North. Our design included the addition of four new escalators, installation of a handicapped accessible elevator, and a new passageway network that gave Metro North commuters access to the North, circumnavigating the need to walk South to GCT to then go North at grade. Once implemented, the new design improved circulation and eased congestion within the station. The design team also upgraded stairways and enlarged corridors to allow for expanded retail space.
Our interior designers specified significant aesthetic improvements: the renovated mezzanines and passageways now have new wall and floor tiles, new graphics, and additional signage. A new acoustical installation has contributed to soundproofing the passageways, while the installation of air handling units has provided tempered air at the Lexington line platform.
