National Institute of Health RTP Campus Master Plan

Raleigh, North Carolina

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) campus at Research Triangle Park (RTP), home to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), houses almost 1500 research scientists, administrators, and support personnel in nine campus buildings, and an additional 300 personnel in two leased spaces, a total of over one million gross square feet of space.

NIH commissioned Metropolitan Architects & Planners, Inc. and IBI Group ▪ Gruzen Samton to develop a campus master plan that would support the Institute’s collaborative scientific research. Factors pivotal to the plan were space pressures caused by the evolving nature of research, lack of core services and clear circulation, anticipated growth in personnel and programs, consolidation of off-campus facilities and environmental upgrades.
