The Staten Island Zoo Master Plan respects and refreshes the historic and natural qualities of this vital Staten Island cultural institution through careful examination of the existing eight-acre grounds. Creative planning and design optimize the visitor experience, with a special focus on its youngest visitors and the Zoo’s educational mission. Hallmarks of the Master Plan are the preservation of the existing trees and celebration of the animal exhibits in their park setting. The Master Plan also enhances the Zoo’s strong teaching mission related to animals and the environment. Planning strategies defined ways to better integrate the Zoo with its surrounding residential community and the Staten Island greenbelt network.
The planning process included participation by the S.I. Zoo leadership and staff, the Department of Cultural Affairs, the Department of Design & Construction, the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Staten Island Borough President’s Office, IBI Group ▪ Gruzen Samton and consultant planning team.
