The small scale, eight-acre Staten Island Zoo was founded with an educational mandate in the 1930s. During Director and Curator of Reptiles Carl Frederic Kauffield’s 40-year leadership the reptile collection won international recognition for its outstanding quality.
IBI Group ▪ Gruzen Samton was chosen to renovate and enlarge the existing building. A skylit entrance provides the focal point for the building while the renovated interior provides ample space for hands-on educational activities and enhanced naturalistic reptile displays. Curvilinear walls recall snake anatomy.
This project received a Design Excellence Award from the AIA Staten Island Chapter in 2004 and an Award of Merit for Cultural Institutions from McGraw Hill’s New York Construction in 2007. This was a joint venture with Curtis + Ginsberg LLP.
