The University Heights Science Park, a 50-acre urban site, functions as a center for the development of cutting-edge technologies. The Science Park is a collaborative venture among Newark’s higher education institutions including Rutgers University, N.J. Institute of Technology, Essex College, the City, the community of Newark, and private industry. The Master Plan, at full development, will encompass more than 1,200,000 sf of research, office, and industrial incubator space.
IBI Group ▪ Gruzen Samton created a comprehensive development plan and design guidelines to direct the evolution of the Science Park, which is organized around pedestrian linkages from a town square to the academic institutions located on the perimeter of the site. We took advantage of current municipal initiatives and established a greenway system to promote Transit Oriented Development. Our Master Plan situates the Science Park’s hub and plaza around the Norfolk Street NJ Transit metro station.
