West 72nd Street Subway Station Renovation and Addition

New York, NY

For the New York City Transit Authority and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, IBI Group ▪ Gruzen Samton designed the rehabilitation of the historic 72nd Street Station of the Broadway and 7th Avenue subway lines. The project, involving a joint venture with Richard Dattner & Partners Architects, necessitated the renovation of station platforms, subway tracks, and the existing landmarked control building. It also included the design of a new control building utilizing the same brick, stone, metal, and glass of the existing control building.
The project team’s innovative design incorporates existing design elements with modern elements that respond to the scale and materials of the original, without compromising new directives for improved circulation, enhanced safety, and ADA compliance.
