AARP – 2016 AGING IN PLACE – MEMPHIS DESIGN COMPETITION

Memphis, Tennessee

2016

The design concept allows for flexible space to accommodate the occupant’s changing needs and individual preferences. Lightweight easy to slide partitions make the space marketable by allowing the occupant to change the space as desired, whether it’s to meet a specific need or to simply provide a larger area. The kitchen is the life of the house. It is the pivot point between public and private. The renovation provides adequate space for accessibility and provides storage at reachable levels for people with different needs and abilities. It can accommodate a large family or be opened to the community garden users. As the occupant grows older and they start to encounter the “empty nest” the private spaces of the house can become part of the public spaces of the home to provide vast and flexible community spaces.
