With the addition of two train lines in 1928 and 1946, the original Eastern Parkway Station (built in 1916) evolved haphazardly into an intermodal bus/subway transportation complex. The intermodal metro subway complex is composed of individual, intersecting stations with unique structural and maintenance problems. This presented IBI Group – Gruzen Samton with the challenge of designing the renovation of the complex as well as the reorganization of several NYCT offices with their complete refurbishment of interior and exterior surfaces, which was completed in 2005. The renovated complex now facilitates increased interchange between trains and buses and supports the efficient transfer of passengers between several transportation types.
