One of the oldest institutions of its kind in America, Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School (Pre-kindergarten through grade 12) has been committed to expanding its facilities for more than two decades. Part of their diverse campus consists of seven separate brownstone townhouses that they wished to consolidate and enlarge. In response, IBI Group Gruzen Samton designed an additional classroom floor to the top of three of the brown-stones and a new 2,000 sf gymnasium with a rooftop play area in the common rear yard. As part of the project completed in 2014, IBI Group Gruzen Samton designed a system of new open corridors and fire stairs to replace existing fire escapes at the rear of the brownstones. An elevator was added to provide full access to all floors. The design is an innovative contribution to the school’s ongoing effort to provide state-of-the-art facilities in this Upper West Side Historic District.
