COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY – LAW SCHOOL – LENFEST RESIDENCE HALL

122,000

New York, New York

2003

IBI Group  – Gruzen Samton has enjoyed a long and successful design collaborative relationship with Columbia University. Our most recent partnership realized Columbia University Law School Lenfest Residence Hall. This 19-story, 122,000 sf building was completed in 2003 at a cost of $31 million. The graduate student residence is located on a site near the University’s main campus, at West 121st street. The building contains 211 apartments (studios and one-bedroom rental units) and includes numerous amenities such as: seminar rooms, full-service kitchens and, through the efficient and innovative use of space, multiple recreational and multifunctional common areas.

Columbia Law School realized that providing a superior residential experience was essential to attracting top students in order to maintain and enhance its status among top tier law schools in the world. New York City’s limited affordable housing options made it difficult to attract students who were already financially strained by staggering education costs.

This created an opportunity for IBI Group – Gruzen Samton, and Columbia University, to develop a program that facilitated a student residence that goes beyond “housing”; becoming a center for Columbia Law School’s residential life.
