MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE – SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND STUDENT SERVICES BUILDING

130,000

Brooklyn, New York

IBI Group – Gruzen Samton worked with the City University of New York (CUNY) to develop a coordinated study for existing campus buildings at Medgar Evers College, one of the newest four year colleges in the CUNY system. Our firm’s comprehensive study revealed the need for a new Student Services building, which we then designed. The new three-story, 130,000 sf facility, located at 1637 Bedford Avenue, incorporates the use of both brick and glass for a modern look while blending in with the architectural features of the surrounding buildings. The new School of Business and Student Services building achieves the client’s goals of alleviating overcrowding and providing swing space (necessary for the renovation of existing buildings). This is also the first building in the CUNY system to respond to Governor George Pataki’s Executive Order 111, requiring “Green & Clean” State Buildings and Vehicles; Guidelines include: Achieving at least a 20% improvement in energy efficient performance, designed and constructed to the US Green Building Council’s LEED rating system, and following selected guidelines of the NYS Green Buildings Tax Credit Program.
