New York, New York
While emphasizing the institution’s underlying creativity and willingness to support innovation, IBI Group – Gruzen Samton’s design captures a sense of the diverse roles undertaken by New Visions for Public Schools, the largest education reform organization in New York State. New Visions’ staff largely consists of educators who, now in the roles of broker, resource provider, advocate, and facilitator, require a working environment that will support them in forming and nurturing new ideas and policies. Through an uninterrupted open plan featuring an open ceiling and exposed ductwork, the converted warehouse loft space helps facilitate the organization’s mission to promote collaboration and unorthodox thinking, while also conveying the seriousness of New Vision’s work. The creative use of materials and color, including buoyant shades of mint green and sky blue, define functional spaces and assist visitors in wayfinding. The use of large-scale patterns further reinforces the multiple functions, or roles, provided by specific spaces.
