New York, Queens
IBI Group – Gruzen Samton has partnered with the New York City School Construction Authority (NYCSCA) since its inception in the 1980s. Our most recent collaboration with the NYCSCA was Primary School/Intermediate School 314Q, a 115,000 sf academic facility completed in 2015, located in Jamaica, Queens that accommodates 830 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through Eight. The building occupies the site of a former Verizon facility in a previously under served and over-capacity school district at the corner of 164th Street and Hillside Avenue. The L-shaped building encloses and defines a significant public open space that serves the recreational needs of the school and community. The school is organized into two main components. A four-story academic wing along the west edge of the site encompasses instructional spaces, offices, student dining and a library. A three-story public assembly wing occupies the northeast corner. This wing comprises the “big box” spaces that require long column-free structural spans and include the gymnasium and multi-use “gymatorium”. A two-story glass-enclosed lobby/gallery designed to join both wings, serves as the school’s main entrance and connects major internal public use.
