LAGUARDIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE – LIBRARY

25,000

New York, Queens

IBI Group – Gruzen Samton expanded and modernized The City University of New York (CUNY) LaGuardia Community College’s Library in Long Island City. This 25,000 sf second floor addition visually and physically links the existing main floor space with a monumental connecting stair. This removal of wall partitions improves brightness and allows additional light to penetrate the core of the reimagined space. The library is located deep within a dark 1960s concrete structure and was no longer serving the 21st century needs of the faculty and students. Increasing student seating capacity was a primary concern for the college. We increased the first, second floor, and mezzanine capacity by 75%, from 420 seats to 732 overall. The quality of the students experience within these spaces was also a priority for the college. From hard-wiring each seat with power and data connections to creating a sophisticated environment that represents exemplary higher learning; design decisions were made to support students in learning and achievement.
