New York, New York
The Hyundai Corporation, a South Korean general trading company, wanted to expand its building portfolio into Downtown Manhattan. The company chose Battery Park City, a 92 acre mixed use community, for the site of their new project, The Regatta. IBI Group Gruzen Samton was retained to design the project because of our firm’s expertise in residential high-rise buildings and knowledge of the district’s special rules and regulations. Completed in 1988, the nine-story 182 unit building, located at 21 South End Avenue, was the first of nine sites developed in Battery Park City’s Residential Phase III. The primary architectural and urban design challenge of the project was to figure out how to best take advantage of the location’s proximity to the Hudson River, New York Harbor, and Statue of Liberty.
